UNDERSTAND THE COMPOUND

What is NAD+?

NAD+ and its reduced partner NADH participate in the transfer of electrons during metabolism. NAD+ also serves as a substrate for enzymes involved in processes such as DNA repair. A 2019 pilot study investigated how directly administered NAD+ was processed in healthy men, tracking the compound and related metabolites in blood and urine. It included eight NAD+ recipients and three saline controls. The measured changes describe short-term metabolism and clearance. They do not establish improvements in energy, cognition, disease outcomes or lifespan, and cannot be substituted for studies of different NAD+ precursors.

Research context

  • Plasma NAD+ and related metabolites
  • Urinary excretion after administration
